I began my Multisport Journey as an unfit 40 year old who had
recently quit a 20+ year smoking habit (among others) and had never participated in any
type of sporting activities, so I am living proof that, to quote the
IRONMAN motto, "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE".
Over
my decades of competition, I have reached a level of training
effectiveness that has allowed me to achieve podium positions at every
distance of TRIATHLON, DUATHLON, and RUNNING events. I have also studied
extensively, resulting in establishing my own Coaching Business in
2006, and becoming Coaching Certified by USATriathlon, USACycling,
IRONMAN, STRYD Running with Power, and even the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION of SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTORS
(another passion that I developed later in life).
As time went by I made certain decisions as to the direction I wanted to take this business. I saw two possible pathways. The first would be to focus my attention upon building a large business, attracting as many athletes as possible, eventually expanding by adding more coaches and standardizing the practices and techniques. I knew from the outset that this was NOT the path that I was interested in following. Instead, I chose a second path. Since my entire raison d'etre for beginning this venture was my passion for the sport and desire to share my passion with others, I decided that I was going to remain a small "boutique" type business. BREAKAWAYMULTISPORT focuses on SERVICE, PERSONALIZATION, and COMMUNICATION. I have made it my mission to deliver on this promise. I decided early on that I would limit my Athlete Roster to a MAXIMUM of 10-15 and have no interest in expanding beyond that number. This enables me to guide each individual to their goals and hope to instill the love being an active athlete and pushing the limits to be the best they can be. Knowing they have given their best is something that they can be proud of for the rest of their life.
My
COACHING PHILOSOPHY has always been to GUIDE my athletes in achieving
their GOALS by designing a program that is built around an
individualized approach to identifying the athletes' needs and building a
progressive training regimen that incorporates sufficient TRAINING
LOADS with adequate RECOVERY, all while not upsetting work and/or family
dynamics. I STRONGLY believe that Multisport Training can and must
ENHANCE the athletes' total lives, not become a chore, obsession, or
distraction that can upset one's life BALANCE. Since schedules are always determined by analyzing previous sessions, they are fluid and flexible, and can be edited or rearranged when the athlete's needs or fitness dictate. There are no cookie cutter plans here. I like to focus on
QUALITY over QUANTITY in building a plan, even for the longer distance
events. Training Volume does NOT need to be extreme to participate in
Triathlon at any distance.
Through my years of coaching athletes of all ages and in all distances, I have been able to adapt to the needs of all levels of athletes, resulting in successes that have far exceeded their expectations in many cases. I feel that it is essential to establish realistic goals , both training and racing, based on factors such as current fitness, adapability, training time availability, and competitive experience. Newcomers to the sport have different needs than experienced triathletes that would like to attempt a more challenging distance or find themselves in a performance plateau. Different needs require a different approach, and that is where experience comes in. I have been there, as a total beginner and as the veteran wanting a new challenge and breaking barriers.
As I, personally, compete in an upper age group, I have learned to
modify my own training and continue to use the lessons I have learned through decades of competition as
a competitive athlete in building my coaching success with my athletes of all ages. I have
also created a FACEBOOK Group, RUST NEVER SLEEPS, that is focused on the
challenges and successes of the masters (40+) athletes.
